About Root Canal Therapy
If the spongy interior portion of the tooth (or pulp) gets an infection, it can develop into a great deal of discomfort and the entire tooth will begin to die if the infected pulp is not stopped. A root canal procedure by our dentists at DentalWorks - Hickory in Hickory, NC takes out the contaminated pulp from the tooth, which can spare the tooth and permit proper restoration start. To strengthen and protect the tooth after the pulp is extracted, a filling element can be added within the tooth otherwise a cap can be put on top of the tooth by our dentists. If the bacteria is not healed, other teeth may become infected, not to mention that the bacterial infection may move into the blood and infect more areas of the body. At DentalWorks - Hickory in Hickory, NC, our dentists offer root canal treatments to assist patients and return their dental health.

"Very friendly and concerned about my teeth and comfort. I'm so very thankful for their services."- K.S. / Google / Mar 15, 2018
"My very first visit to Dental Works was to get a painful tooth extracted. It went amazingly well.. Dr. Spurgas was wonderful and his assistant, Natasha, was absolutely wonderful. I have lived in the Hickory area for 10 plus years and wish I had heard about Dental Works back then. But better late than never. I went in yesterday for my "new patient" appt. I can not tell you how empressed I was. I have never had such an indepth exam from a denal outfit in my life. From Jessica, who took individual x-rays of my teeth to Michele who examined each and every tooth and then the one and only amazing Dr. Spurgas who told me the treatment plan they figured out for me. I've got a lot of work to be done but believe me I know I'm in capable hands with my team and Dental Works."- T.C. / Google / Mar 02, 2018
"Great place. Friendly and knowledgable staff. I am from Chapel Hill, and I love this place more than UNC Chapel Hill Dental a lot more, because the staff are a lot more personal. Even though they don't have the most up to date equipment, my insurance works with them while UNC does not."- M.Z. / Google / Jan 28, 2018

What to Expect
A root canal procedure is most often completed with local anesthesia to desensitize the mouth, plus our dentists may combine sedation as needed. Our dentists will extract the pulp from the contaminated tooth or teeth, then our dentists will cover the tooth with a crown or add filling material. Certain patients are at a larger risk of catching a bacterial infection (generally patients with heart issues like artificial heart valves and congenital defects), so our dentists will prescribe a course of antibiotics before and after the root canal therapy.
If only local sedation is given, the patient should be allowed to drive and get better at their own home, although a few sedation methods may require the individual to have a reliable adult drive them home. Patients will experience short-term numbness and certain patients may experience minor pain that can often be fixed with an over-the-counter pain medication. If a temporary cap was put on top of the infected tooth, the custom made crown will be positioned and bonded by our dentists at a second appointment. Following a root canal, dental care consisting of flossing and brushing at home, in addition to visits to DentalWorks - Hickory as recommended by our dentists are essential to preserve the strength of the treated tooth or teeth.
A root canal therapy is often paid to some extent by the individual's insurance, in some cases dental insurance may not pay extra costs for emergency treatment. Our dentists at DentalWorks - Hickory in Hickory, NC take several methods of payment and DentalWorks - Hickory is able to help individuals with applications for financing, if needed.
